FERRO(IRON): to point out Sangiovese's pride and strength.
SETA(SILK): to praise the colour and elegance of Cesanese.
The Costantini family have been cultivating the vineyards for four generations with passion and care, fully respecting the tradition: a job started in the late 19th century by Domenico, the grandfather of the current owner. In the Thirties, at the very beginning of modern viticulture, he was already cultivating Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes, from which he obtained strong wines not easy to drink.
In the Sixties Piero Costantini, thanks to the introduction of modern vinification techniques and the experimentation of new grapes, paved the way for his great success. In fact, the results came ten years after, when his red wines won two important prizes: the 'three stars' in the Bolaffi catalogue and the insertion in the book I grandi vini del mondo (Great wines from all over the world) edited by Luigi Veronelli.
During the Eighties Costantini obtained more success: the success of his Enoteca (wine cellar) in Cavour Square, established in 1972, and the final accolade of Villa Simone farm estate, where they produce the Frascati wine bearing the same name, sold and appreciated all over the world.
But you never forget your first love! In the early Nineties, when the white wines were obtaining a great success, Piero decided to plant two great kinds of red grapes: Sangiovese and Cesanese. These grapes had been appreciated by ancient Romans too because they produced excellent wines. Sangiovese, in fact, gives its best in the hills of Latium: these results can be compared with those obtained in Tuscany. Cesanese is a noble vineyard from Latium and it's recovering its old prestige.
Thus, the challenge by Piero Costantini has been to create a great red wine, respecting the family tradition: the result of the mix between these two local, historic grapes.
Sangiovese 45%, Cesanese 45%, other grapes 10%
Deep red with violet tints.
Fascinating and persuasive aromas of violet, plum, berries jams and sweet spices.
Its name says it all. It is strong and soft, powerful and elegant, vigorous and delicate: the tannins of the two grapes mix and blend, thus creating an intriguing mix underlined by the sweet vanilla, toasted notes. Surely it will be a lasting wine: you can drink it immediately or you can let it evolve further in the bottle.
